Looking for some painting projects?
Yesterday I was lurking on Pinterest, searching for something completely different, and I got drawn into the realm of fascinating paint crafts. Pinterest is a terrible black hole for this sort of thing.
One delightful craft that I discovered was the idea of painting with the bottom of celery. If you don’t use the very end of the bunch of celery, take that end and dip it lightly into some paint. Place it onto a piece of fabric or paper, and you’ll come out with gorgeous prints that look very rose-like. Lovely!
Smashed flower painting is a fun activity to do on an indoor day, and it’s a good outdoor summer project as well. Take a sheet of thick paper or thick fabric in white or off-white. Take some flowers, preferably some with strong colors. Use a rock, a hammer, or other blunt, smashy object and squish the flowers onto the paper or fabric. You’ve made a flower print!
You’ve made potato prints, but how about beets? Yes, they stain. That’s the point. If you have a wilted beet or two in the fridge, you can chop off its top and make a stamper. Just cut more slices off of it when the “ink” runs out. Not that this really needs to be said, but this activity is best done in painting clothes.
You know how powdered drink products dye your tongue, right? Instead of dyeing your insides, dye paper and fabric instead! Use drink mixes as tempera paints for on the go painting. Open the package, add a little water, and you’re good to go!
How about some oil and water painting? Add some oil to a diluted version of tempera paint, and move it around on your paper. Hang the pages out to dry. You’ll get a combination of stained glass art and painting.
What sorts of weird and wonderful paintings have you done with your kids?
