Old into New

What pieces do you have in your homes that aren’t currently being used? Maybe you have some furnishings that are a bit out of date, yet they are good quality pieces. If so, it’s time to transform them into something useful.

An old headboard is a good example. It can be used as a backrest when building a new bench. The matching footboard, if low enough, could be used for the front of the bench. This project is a pretty simple construction effort, but it will look great. Remove finials from the bedposts if desired to create cleaner lines. Give it a coat of paint in a nice contemporary color.

If the footboard won’t work, you might still be able to take the legs or the bedposts from it and use them as the front legs of the bench. This is a great way to incorporate them into the piece to accentuate the look.

Stop by Pier 1 or another favorite store and pick up a seat cushion for your new bench. Grab a new urn or a potted plant to set near the bench. This would make a cozy area in the entryway for removing shoes. Add an accent table to offer space for keys, mail, a cell phone, or a handbag.

So, what can you do with an old straight back chair? Cut off the back of course. You will probably come up with some creative ways to use the back, but it’s the lower half of the chair we’re interested in right now.

Replace the seat with new wood if necessary, and give the entire piece a fresh coat of stain or paint. You have an instant stool or accent table that you can use in any space. If you choose to use it as a stool, add a cushion or upholster the new piece of wood with batting or fabric before attaching it to the chair base.
