Once Upon a Time Recap: What Happened to Frederick

Last week’s episode of Once Upon a Time was so strong, can you fault me for being a little disappointed in this one?

Fairy Tales are all about true love, wicked witches, brave heroes and the like. Two souls who are meant to be would never find each other through adultery, something that usually winds up causing heartbreak all around. Heroes are brave and true, not men running around town spineless, not to mention standing by idle while their other half of the affair takes all of the blame. I’m getting so sick of James these days. He does redeem himself as Charming, risking his life so true love can thrive, even if it isn’t his particular story.

I do have to cut him and Mary Margaret some slack, though, perhaps it is the curse that continually works its way (with Regina’s help of course) to keep the two apart, coupled with the fact they they are no longer in fairy tale land, but in the real world, where the cynical will say you can catch an affair by drinking the water.

Water was the theme this week, with a mysterious “lady” of the lake, a magical wishing well, and life giving water. Which begs the question, why was the episode named after a new character that only appears for about three seconds?

Speaking of water, the mysterious stranger is mysterious no longer, well, sort of. We still don’t know whether he was fixing the book or altering it before placing it within Emma’s reach, who then passes it along to Henry.

The grace this week comes not from the hero but from the slighted wife, who takes control of her life, realizes that the marriage wasn’t worth saving and tries to move on. Everything may have ended happily ever after there, if Regina didn’t step in to get rid of Kathryn’s blessing to the couple. Kathryn, we find, really does have a true love waiting, Frederick. Too bad she gets into an accident and then goes missing. Bad things happen to people who leave town. Regina will make sure of that.
