Sometimes an inexpensive item can make all the difference and really lift a room. It might be a new set of cushion covers, new curtains, a lamp shade or a collection of photos on the wall. Whatever it is it should be something that reflects you and your family and your interests.
At one stage on one wall we had a collection of black and white photographs all taken by our daughter and taken around the area in which we lived. Framed in simple inexpensive black frames, they became a talking point when visitors came.
Recently we bought a throw that has made such a difference to our lounge room. Our lounge and chairs are deep blue. The throw is a darkish pink with abstract red and pale blue flowers.
The wall behind it is pale blue and the curtains deep blue. The throw on the lounge brightens up the room and ties in with the hot pink cushions and pink tablecloth on a small round table that holds part of my collection of owls.
On that note, an advantage to collecting something is that when people are stuck for gift ideas, they can always add to the collection. My owl collection was boosted by three new owls over Christmas – all different, all individual, all precious in my eyes. I think my husband needs to build an owl roost, as they are spilling over onto two other side tables. We even have three owls in a ceramic tile hanging on a wall.
An inexpensive rug that picks up colors in the room can make a huge difference and really brighten a room. Our son and his wife have recently added a pink and purple and white striped rug to the lounge room and it looks great on the polished wood floors.
The main thing when choosing a new accessory is that it is something you and your spouse or flat mate like, colors are harmonious with what is already in the room and that they are colors you enjoy looking at.
