Online Genealogy Courses

If you are a complete novice to genealogy you may want to sit down and take an actual class or tutorial to help you know how to start. There are several classes available to help you begin your genealogy work. Additionally these may lead you down the path to become a certified genealogist. There are universities that offer a degree in genealogy or family history.

One free class is offered through BYU’s online courses. Finding Your Ancestors is a free course. It provides two lessons that can be completed all at once or at different times. This class is designed for a true novice, and is an excellent place to start if you are looking for information on getting started. Additionally the site offers free courses on understanding records, such as vital records, family records and military records. There are also courses to help with genealogy work for France, Scandinavia and Germany. All the classes are free.

Genealogy.com also has a lot of free online classes to help you get started with genealogy. The classes range from the basics to the more difficult subjects such as pre 1820s research. There are also three series of classes offered to help you with your Internet research. The courses range from six lessons long to sixteen lessons long. They work to keep adding more content, so it is worth visiting the site occasionally to see if they offered a new class on a subject you need.

GenClass.com is an Internet site devoted to offering online classes to help you with your Genealogy work. Unlike the other genealogy classes, these are instructor guided, so you will receive feedback and have the opportunity to have your questions answered. The courses are $34.50 each, and there are several offered each month. If you have really hit a roadblock, the fee may be worth the extra help that you get with these classes.
