Online Resources for Homeschoolers

The internet is a valuable tool for today’s homeschoolers. A child can visit China, research the Civil War, and get tutored in math, without ever leaving her computer chair. The internet has opened up the world for the homeschooling family offering everything from support to online curricula. With so much at your fingertips, it is easy to get overwhelmed and spend more time than intended pounding the keyboard. So, here is a short list of some of my favorite places online as a homeschooling mom. I hope you find these sites beneficial in your journey as well. Please share any in the comments so we can help each other navigate our way through the internet.

Ambleside Online: This site offers a full Charlotte Mason curriculum from preschool through 12th grade. This is also a wonderful resource for living book lists.

Project Gutenburg: This site offers an array of free books online. You will want to check here before purchasing your literature books this year. You may just get many of them for free.

Harmony Fine Arts at Home: This site provides free pdf files for high school art and music appreciation. This is a wonderful resource for those who are unsure how to implement these subjects.

Daily Grammar: This site offers hundreds of lessons and quizzes covering a vast array of grammar for free. This site is extensive enough to use in place of a grammar workbook.

The Math Worksheet Site: You can customize math worksheets for your student. You can use this for review or in place of workbooks, however, it is not extensive enough to replace a curriculum.

Spelling City: This site will help your student excel in spelling. You can view preset lists or enter in your own. The site will help your child practice the list and even quiz her.

The Old Schoolhouse: This magazine is a must for all homeschoolers. You will find encouragement, ideas, curriculum reviews and much more. It will serve a as a guide through your years of homeschooling.

Heart of the Matter: This is another site known for encouraging homeschooling moms. You will find this a valuable resource as you go through your homeschooling year.

Custom Tracer: If your kids practice handwriting then this is the site for you. You can print off customized handwriting practice sheets any time for free.

iKnow That.com: This is one of the best sites for educational games on the net. The games are truly educational while entertaining. Your child can relax and play a game while learning skills and reinforcing old lessons. This site is for grades preschool through 6th grade. I am not one for using computer games for more than fun but this site’s games are a great way to reinforce lessons after a long school day.
