Online Tutor!

While building a list of work from home jobs for my website, I noticed that online tutoring was an option. I actually had looked at it before, but ignored it since I was not a teacher. Then I read that you did not have to be a teacher to apply for one site!

So, to see what happened, I applied and forgot about it. (Most of the jobs I get are actually jobs I apply for and then forget about. It is the ones I keep thinking about that seem to lose my resume.)

About a week later I got a call! They wanted to hire me. So I figured, let’s give it a try. The company I got on with pays $10 per tutoring hour. Though if a student does not show, I only have to wait 30 minutes but also only make $3.50.

I signed up to tutor reading, English was always a good subject for me. Then she told me I have to sign up to do grade school math. OK, I can handle that (I think.) I did have to take a small test to prove I can do it, and amazingly I passed! However, when she gave me the algebra equation I about fell off my chair. So surprisingly, I can only tutor math to grade 5, thank you!

Training was fun! You are in a classroom with a chat at the bottom and a white board on top. The lessons are slides and you and the student can write on them. It’s a pretty fun way to learn. It’s like an interactive learning game where someone talks to you.

Though the pay is good, the difficult part is getting students. Now, I know I am new, so I hope that the students will increase. You are actually supposed to be assigned students, but this can take up to a month. That’s OK. You get emails when a position is open or when someone can no longer tutor a student. You can grab either permanent students, which means you get them weekly, or temporary students which means you just get them the date specified.

The problem is that everyone is competing for these grabs. You have to be logged in and checking the website because if you wait for the emails, by the time you get there someone has already grabbed them. Yes, I stalk my inbox.

The thing is, I’m enjoying the tutoring part. Though my first few students were not very engaged, I finally got one who was awesome and I had fun. Then my next student was on time and I got to teach! I find it to be very fulfilling. I figure I have to be home anyway since I tutor around when my son gets off the bus, so I might as well make some extra money. If you are interested in tutoring, there are a few companies that do hire. Good luck!
