Oops He Did It Again!

The Super Bowl is still a couple of weeks away, but controversy is already brewing regarding an upcoming ad slated to air during the big game, and guess who it features? Mr. Britney Spears himself. Yes, Kevin “I got Fed-Exed” Federline is smack in the middle of it all.

According to the New York Post, executives in the fast-food industry are blasting the commercial for Nationwide Insurance, which features Brit’s ex daydreaming about being a rap star but really working in a fast-food joint. Representatives for the National Restaurant Association called the ad “demeaning and unpleasant” to the nation’s 12.8 million restaurant workers.

Reps for the association issued a statement which said they believe the ad could have been done differently: “A sudden change in Federline’s career could have been depicted with him holding an unemployment benefit check. It shouldn’t be necessary for a company to disrespect others to get its point across. …It’s a negative, unfair and inaccurate reflection. It’s not Kevin we take issue with, but the depiction of where he ends up.”

A spokesman for Nationwide responded by saying the ad isn’t meant “to offend or insult the many fine individuals who work in the restaurant industry.” Rather, the insurance company maintains the ad is meant to be a “humorous take on one person’s life. …The focus of the ad is the element of surprise, not the setting of a fast-food restaurant.”

According to the paper, the commercial shows Federline journeying from rap superstar to fry cook. It is meant to dramatize Nationwide’s slogan, “Life comes at you fast.” Personally, I think they could have avoided all the controversy by simply using Federline’s actual life events to personalize the company’s slogan. They could have just used news footage of Federline pre-Britney and post-Britney and called it a day. Of course, then Federline wouldn’t have made money off the self-deprecation, but hasn’t his venture into rapping already accomplished that?
