Organized Mornings: Papers, Pennies, Permission Slips

Do you run around looking for a pen to sign those permission slips and progress reports or looking for pages from the report you were supposed to turn in at work? There’s a better way…

Set up a station for papers needed for work, permission slips and school notes, and other important items. Include a supply of envelopes to place milk money for kids or daily cash for others. Mark each person’s name on his or her envelope and put the allotted amount into each envelope the night before. Aside from saving time, this will help ensure that you don’t run out of cash on hand before everyone gets what he or she needs. If you do, you’ll be able to run to the ATM in the evening instead of worrying and fussing in the morning as you’re trying to begin your day.

Your “station” can be as simple as a shallow basket on a desk or countertop or an inbox type container that is separated for different items. Place it in the kitchen or home office. Keep school papers and work papers separate or simply create a section for each person in the household. Include a pencil holder that contains pens that actually work. It’s also not a bad idea to include a jar of change, in case someone needs a little extra to grab a snack or a drink after work, school, or practice.

Have each family member or roommate place bills or papers that you need to see in a particular area, and check this section each evening. Place a calendar in the area as well to help you remember when reports, notes, or money are needed. There’s nothing worse than walking toward the car only to have your child shout, “Oh, yeah, I forgot; today is picture day!” You also wouldn’t want your child to miss a special field trip due to a lost permission slip.

It works great for adults to, because you’ll always know where a certain coupon, letter, bill that needs to be paid, or report for work is located, and you can grab it on your way out.
