My husband recently started cleaning out a storage room in our basement, in which he found china and crystal. It was hard to recognize what the pieces were at first because they were covered in sawdust.
Yes, they had been kept on a shelf in the same room my husband did some of his sawing in. While I wanted to wash and clean the pieces, I remembered that that we don’t have enough space in our kitchen to store it.
That was the whole reason for these beautiful pieces to be stashed away for the past several years. And it’s all because I have a small kitchen.
If you are like me, finding a place for everything can be a real challenge when your kitchen space isn’t very large. Because of that, your kitchen might be cluttered. Or it might be that you miss out on owning certain items for the simple reason that you have no where to put it.
I would love to own a wok, a large food processor and a number of other items. But the problem is that I don’t have enough space in my kitchen.
So I decided to come up with a plan. I went through my kitchen and took inventory of the items that I don’t use on a regular basis or are used on a seasonal basis.
For instance, I realized that we only use our ice cream scooper during the summer months. While that is a smaller item, I also thought about how the blender is used during the summer to make smoothies.
The crock pot is frequently in use during the winter. And the same is true with our George Forman grill. So it gave me the idea of putting away seasonal items.
Large plastic containers are a great way to keep your items safe (and sawdust-free). You can label them according to seasons and when it’s that time, bring them out and put away last season’s items.
I also thought about the dishes that I use for Christmas and the 4th of July bowls that could be stored in containers labeled with the appropriate holiday. This way you can box up your holiday items and have them ready when it’s that time.
What ideas do you have for organizing a smaller kitchen?
