Yesterday I tackled my coat closet. It was time, and although the whole time I was dreaming of turning it into a craft closet, I stuck it out and now it’s nicely organized.
The first thing I did was take everything out of it. I was amazed at what I found. Some of the things could be returned to their rightful places and some things went into a pile for the yard sale. I had no idea there were so many pairs of gloves in that closet. Yet, in the winter I can never find a pair.
After the closet was empty I cleaned the walls and the floor. I thought about giving it a new coat of paint but knew if I did that nothing else would get done for the day so I saved that for another day.
There were so many little odds and ends in that closet that I needed to find a way to corral them. The little plastic shelving unit was under ten dollars at Walmart and the bins I already had.
I put the carpet shampooer in the basement. Since it only gets used a few times a year it really shouldn’t be taking up valuable real estate in the coat closet.
Several coats and all those dresses went into the yard sale pile as well. How long do you keep that kind of stuff? It’s never going to be worn again so I might as well let someone else use them.
I used the baskets to sort the things that were in the closet. One basket holds the dog’s leash and potty bags. Another has all the playing cards, still another is full of extension cords. A bigger one holds gloves and scarves.
There is even room for my rain boots and my yoga mat.
After it was all neat and cleaned I rolled my brand new vacuum in there and felt satisfied with my work. It looks good, but this closet is by the garage, not the front door where most of the coat closet mess accumulates, except there is no coat closet. That’s a project for another day.
