In my home the family room always seems to be the last town in Dodge. What I mean by that, and this is a secret confession, is that on weekends, I will sometimes banish the rest of the family to that room so I can do good cleaning of the rest of the house. And, no matter how often I pick up the house during the day, the family room is always in chaos by the end of the night. I am hoping that with a bit of organization, I can tame the room and make it easier to maintain.
There are some unique challenges in a family room. Some of the items that tend to create obstacles to a well-organized and functional family room include the following:
- Books
- Magazines
- Video tapes and DVDs
- Cassettes, CDs and records
- Games
We have most of these obstacles in our family room. The baby loves to pull books from the shelves, the kids pull out videos, magazines tend to overflow on to all flat surfaces, and family games are stuffed into all available shelf space above the fireplace.
I’ve already begun to tackle two of those issues: books and magazines. You may have read my earlier articles on organizing the library and what to do with de-cluttered books. (If not, check the end of this article for links). The clean out and organization has really make a bit of a difference. But of course, there is still a long way to go. Will you share in this task with me? Let me know what your family room problems are, and let’s try some new organizational strategies together. I think we can make a big dent this month and be well on our way to a nicely organized home.
