Organizing Your Fridge and Its Environs

Your refrigerator is your friend, but what kind of pal are you? Do you clean big white, black or almond-colored Sara or Frederick out every week or so to give it time to breathe and make way for new food friends to circulate? Your fridge has feelings too, even if they are mostly cold ones. Make the best of your friendship, if you dare, by considering the following suggestions.

Place frequently used food items, like lunch-making supplies, in the shelves either on the refrigerator or the freezer door. This makes them quick and easy to find and will save you time rummaging for things. (Your missing uncle whom your aunt declared dead seven years ago might even be back there; so if you don’t want to explain things, be careful!)

Keep the freezer fairly full so that it cools more efficiently. If you’re low on food, fill the gaps with bowl of ice. Don’t forget to label and date all thing bound for the freezer. Then you know exactly how long your stored food has been standing there in the cold waiting for you to use it. Don’t let it make you feel guilty, but trust me, you will forget about things. Label them now and save yourself some energy later.

Clean out the refrigerator before expecting company. If people don’t visit you at all, then pick the day you expect your garbage pick-up. (If they don’t visit you either it really might be something you have said.) By scheduling a cleaning, you will provide a good flow for the gunky things in the fridge to disappear.

Free up the fridge for a big event by cooling drinks in an ice-filled bathtub. If you find yourself in a blizzard, a snowdrift will do just as well. (Just make sure it isn’t too deep or the celebration in question might turn out to be a search party.) If there is a freezer in the basement, stock it with large items like roasts and unwanted relatives. Otherwise, people might talk.

Make friends with your fridge. It’s there to serve you coldly but efficiently.
