Fourth of July is over, and there aren’t any other holidays until Labor Day. Between now and September, you are likely to decide that it’s time for a party, picnic, or barbeque. Holidays lend themselves to simple, instant themes, but how do you come up with a theme for a “just because” party or a birthday party for someone who is a bit mature for Spiderman or Sponge Bob?
Summer parties bring all sorts of things to mind. Tropical fruits and colorful flowers can be the start of a great Luau, with just a few simple additions. A grass tablecloth from a party store can quickly be turned into individual grass skirts with a pair of scissors and a little Velcro or a few snaps. Make kebobs of fruit and fresh grilled vegetables and mix up a nice tropical punch. String together some artificial flowers to create a lei for each guest.
Another fun idea is to use flip flops and other beach gear. Pick up one of those large thermal bags that works as a portable beach cooler and fill it with ice and drinks. Hang a few inexpensive life saving rings or lifejackets (if you have some) from the backs of chairs. Use a new, brightly colored beach towel as a table runner.
Bake a cake and cut it into the shape of a flip flop and use licorice whips for the straps. Another cute cake idea is to bake one round layer and one small square pan. When cool, frost the round cake with yellow frosting (you can use vanilla and add yellow food coloring). Cut the square cake into triangles, frost with orange icing, and place around the round cake with the points facing outward. You now have a cute sunshine cake. You can make it even more fun by picking up a new pair of kid’s sunglasses, removing the arms, and placing on the cake. Use a licorice whip to add a big smile.
Pick up a couple pairs of new, cheap flip flops to use as decorations. You can hang one upside down and use it as a towel holder near the grill. You can use an assortment of tiny ones to create a center piece with some clean pea gravel or small white rocks and a few votive candles.
Just use your imagination and get inspired by gorgeous summer weather.
