Our Night in the Hotel

The day that we met our soon to be sons’ was one of the best days of our lives. We played games, had snacks and got acquainted with our new kids. We had a chance to talk to the foster parents to see what they liked and did not, their schedules etc. It was almost like we were getting ready to babysit 2 kids and their parents were telling us the rules.

When it came time for the older child to go back to his foster home we packed up the 14 month old and took him back to the hotel with us. This was very weird, we just met him a few hours earlier and now he is spending the night at a hotel with us.

The hotel had a port-a-crib ready for us already and soon our first night with our new son would begin. We had no clue what we were doing, I did a little because of my niece and nephews but my husband had never really been around babies. Granted he was not a new born, but he was still a baby. We went to dinner and then took him back to the hotel. We had brought a couple of toys with us to help keep them entertained on the 4 hour ride to our home. We had one book that the baby seemed to like, it was a nursery rhyme book with Sesame Street characters and when you opened it a lullaby played. He must have loved the music because he opened the book to hear it play for hours.

I am not sure how much time my husband or I slept that night, we sat on the edge of the bed and watched him sleep. We kept taking pictures of him and just watching him sleep. He was so cute just sleeping all cuddled in his crib.

We got our first dose of parenting in the morning when we were headed to a restaurant for breakfast when his diaper exploded. Now we were not ready for this at all, we both have weak stomachs and this definitely made breakfast a little less tempting. Being we were only having him for a night we did not have any change of clothes for him. When we got him cleaned up we took him to the store in just his diaper to buy some new clothes.

We were probably quite the sight two over tired adults and one half naked baby, shopping for clothes. We forgot to check his clothing size before we went inside so we held the clothes up to him to find a new outfit. We survived out first parenting oops and had breakfast before we had to bring him back to the foster home. We would leave him at his foster home for one more night so they could say their good-byes before he comes home with us the very next day. Walking away from the home without him was hard but we knew soon he would be ours forever.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
