Recently, I went to the 2010 General Relief Society Meeting that precedes General Conference every year. It was as wonderful as always. Full of words of wisdom from our leaders, full of beautiful, heavenly music, and full of wise words from our Prophet.
President Monson gave a wonderful talk you can find here. I could not help but feeling a little bit called to repentance while also feeling encouraged and loved. Isn’t that what is so wonderful about having a living Prophet? My favorite part of his talk was when he quoted Mother Theresa in saying,
“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”
I love this quote. As members of the church, we usually think of ourselves as loving, Christ-like people. However, we are not perfect. And, many of us can be judgmental. I find that in the church especially, we judge each other instead of loving them. I wonder why this is? I have thought about this a lot. We should look around on Sundays thinking, “Oh doesn’t Sister Smith look nice today” or, “I wonder what I can do for Brother James”. But, instead, the natural man’s (or woman’s) instinct is to judge.
He spoke so much of Charity and how it is the Pure Love of Christ. If we always had Charity in our hearts, there would not be room for judging. While I do believe that judging each others as members of the church is especially hurtful, I feel that more importantly we need to try and love those that do not belong to our faith. After all, if we truly loved our fellow man, no matter what color, shape, size, or political belief, it would only bring us closer to Christ. Isn’t that our ultimate goal as members of His church?
I am so grateful to have a living Prophet. In these difficult times of adversity, and trials, he truly is our watchman on the tower waiting to give us the counsel and advice we need from our Heavenly Father.
