Our Son Has Epilepsy

We just had our first sleep deprived EEG and we are headed to the pediatric neurologist. I already had a bad feeling in my stomach after seeing all the spikes on the EEG machine. The doctor walks in the room and he had some printouts in his hand. I remember this feeling very well because this was the moment before our son had epilepsy.

The doctor went through all these technical terms explaining that our son was having abnormal seizure brain waves showing as spikes on the EEG. That all four areas of the brain were affected and they were happening more frequently than we first thought. How it that we did not notice that he is was having seizures?

Every time I thought of a person having seizures I think of a person on the floor in convulsions and he never did that, all he had to been doing was zoning out. Well my sister in law was right he was having petit mal seizures also known as absence seizures. The neurologist also let me know that the there was a likelihood that he would also be having the convulsive grand mal seizures.

We find out that our three year old is going to be on medication every day for possibly the rest of his life. We had his 2 siblings at home and I was worried that this may be hereditary or genetic. The doctor said that the likelihood was slim, but that it was a chance. We thought this may have been caused by physical abuse he endured with his biological mother but, there was the chance that it was something that happened or that it came from the paternal side. Although the kids are biological siblings they have different dads so we kept our fingers crossed and prayed that all three of our children would get this disease.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
