Outdoor Adventures for Women Only

Have you ever dreamed of leaving the kids with your husband and jetting off on a vacation with just your best gal pals? Most women would probably opt for a week of pampering at a luxury spa, but for others their idea of a relaxing week off from household duties includes spending time in the great outdoors exploring sites they typically only see on TV.

If you happen to be attracted to the latter trip option you might consider checking out packages offered by Adventures in Good Company. The group caters to women from around the world who aren’t afraid of breaking a sweat… or a few nails.

The company offers a series of packages that cost less than $1000. The one that caught my eye retails for $975 and features a four-day long hiking trip in Utah’s national parks. The trip uses the Zion Lodge in Zion National Park as home base, and includes four- to six-hour day hikes in Zion or Bryce National Park each day. (You’ll log about 25 total miles of trail by the end of the trip.)

According to tour directors, some of the hiking is strenuous, but the views make the effort worth it. The trip includes hiking Zion’s Angels Landing trail and touring Bryce Canyon National Park’s brightly colored hoodoos.

The tour starts November 14, 2008 and includes accommodations, all meals, ground transportation, entrance fees, and guides.

If you are able to escape for a few extra days you might consider signing up for a 5-day tour of South Dakota. The trip costs $1,620 and centers on Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. The tour includes visits to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Badlands National Park, a stay at a resort in Custer State Park, and a visit to a woolly mammoth fossil excavation site. You’ll tour each site as a group and have some free time for hiking, horse-back riding, and other activities.

The trip departs August 11, 2008 and the tour cost covers accommodations, airport transfers from the Rapid City airport and ground transportation, admission fees and sightseeing, some meals, and a tour leader.
