Here’s a simple way to add some texture and interest to your yard. Add a rock garden. You can create a rock garden around the perimeter of your home, or put one anywhere in your front or back yard to make it more attractive. You can make it any shape you like, although geometric shapes are the simplest to make.
Start small and see how you like the effect. Measure an area that you want to treat. Cover the ground with plastic, and frame the area with the material of your choice. You can use logs, lumber, railroad ties, larger rocks, or choose from a great assortment of landscaping trims. Dig a shallow trench as wide as the framing material to secure it in place.
Fill the space with lava rocks, white rock, pea gravel, or any type of material that you find attractive. If you buy rock in bags, the label should tell you how much area each bag will cover. It is a good idea to buy more than you think you will need to achieve good, generous coverage. Make sure the rock is spread out evenly for a crisp, clean look. If you intend to do a large area or several rock beds, consider seeking estimates for delivery of a truckload of rock.
This is a great project to work on with your children. They will have fun, it’s a good chance to spend some time together, and you can all enjoy the fruits of your labor. Give each child a pail to fill and let him or her pour material into the new rock bed. Use small pails so children won’t try to carry too much. Your children can also help you level out the stone once it is all in place.
You are bound to get compliments on the new design. Your child will feel great when he or she can say, “I helped!”
