Today was the annual Track Day at our elementary school. I will admit to grumbling just a little bit before I went. With only ten days left of school, I didn’t feel like giving up my last free Thursday. And I’ve been to so many track days over the years, they’ve lost a little charm. Today was my eleventh track day as a parent.
I’m so glad I went today though. My children were glad to see me, I got some great pictures, and got to visit with some other parents. Mainly though, this was the most creative track day that I’ve ever seen.
One game had the children trying to knock baseballs off orange pylons with a Frisbee. I think this is a great idea. We don’t have pylons, but I’m sure we can think of something to use. Even soda bottles would work to prop up a ball, though they would be much easier to knock down. Large plastic flower pots turned upside down might work, or old batting tees.
The marble game had a baby wadding pool filled with water. Someone had cut up swim noodles into about 2 inch sections. These floated on the top of the pool so it made it harder to see the marbles at the bottom. The kids took off their shoes and tried to pick up as many marbles as they could with their feet in 45 seconds. I think the marble pool idea would be a great birthday party or family reunion game.
The kids also got to run around and spray water bottles to pop bubbles. It’s actually a little harder than it sounds to aim at the bubbles. Again, I think this would be a great party game. I plan on trying it with water guns.
There was even a castle to siege. A lot of small boxes were painted to look like castle walls, windows, and turrets. The kids got to build the castle with the boxes, then they tried to knock it down by aiming a large slingshot. It took three kids to hold this huge slingshot. I love the idea of the painted boxes.
I’m glad I went to Track Day. It gave me some fun ideas for our next party.
