I’m talking, of course, about bras. That’s the funny name we used to refer to them by back in high school. I have a high schooler of my own now who would be mortified to know that I wrote about her and bras in the same paragraph. She’s very modest. That’s a good thing. It does, however, mean that it’s difficult to buy intimate apparel for her.
I got around this by having her professionally fitted at our local high-end department store’s bra area. She was uncomfortable, but the fitter does this for a living and knew just how to approach things. She was very matter-of-fact as if Jenna was trying on a pair of socks. It worked, no tears of embarrassment. The best thing is that I now know exactly what size bra she wears. There was no charge for the fitting, and the fitter recommended that she get resized every year.
Have you ever been fitted? I really was surprised to realize how little thought I’ve given to something I wear every day. Even though it kills me to pay retail, I probably spend more on a pair of discounted jeans that I wear once a month than on something that makes a difference to my health (and my looks!).
I know my daughter’s size now. I know her tastes. She would never go bra shopping in public, except for the annual fitting. Heaven forbid that one of her friends should see her with a *gasp* bra in her hands. Finding a sale online is a real blessing.
