Actor Owen Wilson continues to recover in a California hospital today four days after rescue crews responded to his home and his life changed forever. Santa Monica police confirmed that officers responded to an attempted suicide at Wilson’s house on Sunday. In the days since, producers of the movie Wilson was days away from beginning work on said the star will no longer be a part of the project.
As with most Hollywood tragedies, fans will likely never learn all the details surrounding Wilson’s emotional breakdown. But, that’s certainly not stopping tabloids and other entertainment sources from trying to piece together the puzzle that is Wilson’s troubled life.
I’ve seen a number of reports filled with speculation and assumptions, but the one that stuck with me was the interview an entertainment show did with rocker Courtney Love. Kurt Cobain’s ex-wife claims that Wilson fell in with a bad crowd, specifically her ex-boyfriend Steve Coogan who is described as a “party boy rehab veteran.”
Love told reporters that Coogan was a “terrible influence” on Wilson.
“I tried to warn Owen. I tried to warn his friends,” Love said. “I hope from the bottom of my heart that Owen stays the hell away from that guy.”
In addition, according to TV’s “Extra,” Coogan’s negative influence over Wilson was the main reason Kate Hudson broke up with him in June.
“The drugs and partying were a huge factor in the breakup,” says a pal of Hudson, who has a 3-year-old son from her first marriage to ex-husband Chris Robinson. “As much as she liked him, she didn’t want to be around that.”
Other reports suggest Wilson suffers from depression and that his split with Hudson caused him to alienate himself and further depend on illegal substances to deal with his pain. In fact, US Weekly recently reported that Wilson’s pals, including actor Woody Harrelson, staged an informal intervention because they were concerned about the blond actor’s erratic behavior.
According to his publicist, friends and family are surrounding the 38-year-old actor as he works to get through “this difficult time.”
As for purported troublemaker Coogan, he tells “Extra” the claims he is the source of Wilson’s problems are untrue. “These accusations are unfounded, unhelpful and hurtful to all concerned,” Coogan responded. “We are taking legal advice.”
