My family and I spent the past month in Hawaii visiting my parents, brothers, cousins and friends. It was a joyous time filled with love and laughter… and a few tiffs. We didn’t fight, but we did engage in some heated debates, but they weren’t about politics or religion; rather, they had to do with scrapbooking. More specifically, they were about the use of quotes in a scrapbook layout.
Strange, right? I know, but here’s the background. While we were home for the holidays, my aunt and cousin decided to put together a Christmas-themed memory book using all of the photos we snapped of everyone enjoying themselves at various family get-togethers. My cousin wanted to use some fun Christmas-themed quotes as embellishments on some of the pages. My aunt dislikes the use of quotes in scrapbook designs and refused to add the sayings to the pages. They went back and forth for a good 20 minutes before other family members started adding in their two-cent’s worth. Soon people who have no interest in (or knowledge of) scrapbooking took sides on the great quote debate.
I tend to agree with my cousin; if you find a quote that is appropriate for the page design, then use it. Who cares if the words aren’t yours? Own the layout, even if you can’t take credit for the famous sayings that embellish it. In the end, my aunt and cousin compromised by adding two quotes to various layouts. Basically, my cousin gave in, but on the bright side I am now the proud owner of her quote list and plan to use the sayings in my designs. Some of my favorites are:
“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” Norman Vincent Peale
“Perhaps the best Yuletide decoration is being wreathed in smiles.”
Author Unknown
“The joy of brightening a child’s heart creates the magic of Christmas.” W. C. Jones
“Oh, for the good old days when people would stop Christmas shopping when they ran out of money.” Author Unknown
“Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.” Peg Bracken
“He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.” Roy L. Smith
