Picking up the family and moving to a new home is both exciting and exhausting. As you become settled, you and your family will have a wonderful opportunity to create new memories and make new friends but the first course of action is getting there. The bottom line is that you have a number of options for making your household move much easier so everything runs smoothly.
First and most importantly, start by writing everything down. For instance, if you are packing the boxes yourself, make a list of the items in each box. In this case, if the box contains kitchen dishes, you could simply mark “dishes” but if the box has dishes and your can opener, list it as “dishes and can opener.” While this might seem like overkill, you will be thankful when you arrive at your new home and can easily find everything needed.
We also suggest that you use only quality boxes. While some boxes can be found at local stores, you may also want to invest a little bit of money in purchasing the best. Secure boxes will be easier to handle and keep your belongings protected better. You might also consider buying several wardrobe boxes. In addition to being used for moving clothes on hangars, you can also use the wardrobe boxes for moving pictures, mirrors, plants, and other similar items.
You might also consider buying colored stickers, designating one color per room. With this, you could use all green stickers for the master bedroom, red stickers for the children’s room, yellow for bathrooms, orange for the kitchen, blue for the garage, and so on. This makes it much easier to see where the boxes need to go at quick glance, keeping everything neatly organized.
Another great tip is to use plastic Ziploc bags for storing smaller items such as jewelry, medication, or perfume, as well as items that might leak to include body wash, shampoo, or conditioner. Then, create one box as your “parts” box. In this box, you would store a flat head screwdriver, Phillip’s head screwdriver, pliers, tape, needle nose pliers, and other common tools that might be needed when you arrive at your new home. With a little bit of good planning, your move should be easy and fun.
