After a long, at times seemingly never-ending, wait we are finally moving in a week. Consequently the house at the moment is filled with packed cartons and boxes.
Moving time is a good time to sit back and take stock. To decide, ‘Do I need this? Do I use it? Is it just taking up space that could be better used? Is there someone who would benefit more from this piece of furniture, piece of clothing, appliance?’
Of course some things are of sentimental value. These include cards or hand made gifts from my children, letters and inexpensive items of special significance from my husband, special keepsakes that would have no value for anyone else but have great value for me. These things I will never part with. Nor will I part with the years and years of journals which fill a number of boxes. A record of my walk with the Lord they are reminders of how far He has brought me and how far I still have to go.
Moving time is a good time to take stock of the physical things that clutter my life but also a time to take stock of my spiritual life. It’s a time to think about what to leave behind and about making new beginnings.
As I think about leaving behind some things, I would like to leave behind me those sins which trip me up too often. Two that came to mind are:
Reacting before I’ve had time to think things through.
Thinking too much about self and not thinking about the needs of others more.
I will be asking God to help me deal with these sins and leave them behind.
What about you? Take time now to sit and take stock of your life. What specific sins and charcter traits will you ask God to help you deal with and eliminate from your life?
The good thing is we don’t have to wait till we are physically on the move, we can choose to ask God to reveal our shortcomings now and help us deal with them, because, ’Thanks Be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ,’ 1 Corinthians 15:57.
