Celebrity Good Week/Bad Week News

It’s been a good week for…Cloris Leachman Being in her eighties obviously agrees with Cloris Leachman! Still a contestant on this season’s “Dancing with the Stars,” Cloris has just been named as the grand marshal of the coming Rose Parade. Typical Cloris, she said she is happy to be the grand marshal of something “older than I am.” It’s been a bad week for…the Dalai Lama The Tibetan leader was hospitalized this week with gallstones. He had surgery last Friday in New Delhi, but aides think he will be discharged early next week. It’s been a good week for…Tim Robbins … Continue reading

Who is Annie Leibovitz?

With all the brouhaha about the Miley Cyrus photos in Vanity Fair, some of you may just be wondering who is Annie Leibovitz anyway. Annie is a celebrated photographer who is known for her close collaboration with her photography subjects. Annie became interested in the arts in high school and attended San Francisco Art Institute after graduation. She became interested in photography after her family took a trip to Japan and developed her skills while working various jobs. In 1970, she started working at Rolling Stone. By 1973, publisher Jann Wenner had named her the chief photographer. On December 8, … Continue reading

Rock Star Babylon: They Did What?

I love the “Babylon” books – those named, of course, after the biblical city Babylon. These books talk about the materialistic and hedonistic pleasures of – you guessed it – celebrities and musicians. The first one I read was “Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood’s Darkest and Best Kept Secrets” by Kenneth Anger. Ah, this one dished a lot of dirt about classic Hollywood stories: Errol Flynn’s brushes with under aged girls (which lead to brushes with the law), Rudolph Valentino (was the “Latin Lover” really gay?), the Fatty Arbuckle scandal (so much for “innocent until proven guilty”), … Continue reading

Celebrity Tragedy: Christian Brando

Okay, he is really not a celebrity, but Christian Brando’s name has been in and out of the news for years. It could not have been easy growing up as the son of a larger than life character such as Marlon Brando. And now Christian’s name is back in the news. Earlier this week, the 49-year-old Christian was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center to be treated for pneumonia. An unidentified friend said Brando’s first child is “not doing very well. He has pneumonia with complications.” Christian was born in 1958, the product of … Continue reading

“Tomorrow” Host Tom Snyder Dies

When I was growing up, I loved to watch “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” But, if you really wanted to watch something edgy, you tuned into “The Tomorrow Show” with Tom Snyder. Snyder, a last night television pioneer, died yesterday from complications due to leukemia. He was 71 years old. Snyder hosted “The Tomorrow Show” from 1973 until 1981. He was known for his casual interview style (he smoking during most of his show – something that would be unheard of nowadays) and his hearty laugh as well as his provocative guests and subject matters. He had many memorable … Continue reading

One Hit Wonders

I was watching CBS Sunday Morning and they did a segment on Don McLean. If you don’t remember, he wrote and sang the 1971 hit “American Pie.” At the time, he was a struggling 25 year old, but “American Pie” would change his life. His long running ode to rock-n-roll and the fatal crash of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens hit number one and was Don’s biggest hit. Some people think Don was a one hit wonder, but he did have several more songs that reached the charts. But it was “American Pie” that made him famous. … Continue reading

Juicy Hollywood Tidbits – June 17, 2007

Oprah Recognized as Most Powerful Celebrity It probably comes as a surprise to no one, but Forbes deemed talk show mogul Oprah Winfrey the world’s most powerful celebrity. She beat out fellow celebrities Elton John, The Rolling Stones and Tom Cruise for that honor. Who came in second? Mega sports star Tiger Woods came in second to Oprah with singer Madonna finishing in third place. In case you were wondering how Forbes came about their ranking, they consider the celebrities earnings, Internet presence as well as television, radio, and press coverage. Oprah lost her first place position last year to … Continue reading

Oops, Britney Did It Again

You know, as much as Britney Spears as gone through this past year, you would think that her return to the stage would be structured so that there was little chance of error. I mean, she has had enough public humiliation, why take a chance while trying to revive her sagging music career. Well, it seems she did it again. Last week it was reported that she lip-synched during her San Diego show, but apparently, at her mini-tour in Orlando, it was really obvious. The show only lasted 15 minutes, but her backing track skipped five times and she was … Continue reading
