New Imagination Movers Album Out Tomorrow

All fans, or parents of fans, of Playhouse Disney’s bouncy Imagination Movers music quartet have reason for excitement this week, as a new CD from the band hits shelves tomorrow. Meanwhile, The Imagination Movers themselves resume filming their hit series in New Orleans this month. Stitch Kingdom reports that the band’s new CD, released on June 8, features 18 original songs from the second season of Imagination Movers. It also has some details of the third season of the show, which sees the Movers explore beyond the Idea Warehouse and meet up with even more surprise guest stars. I didn’t … Continue reading

Singer/Songwriter Alex Chilton Dies at 59

Singer/songwriter Alex Chilton, a Memphis music legend, passed away in New Orleans this week of a heart attack at the age of 59. Alex Chilton may not be a familiar name to you, but his music career spanned more than 40 years and he left his mark on countless other musicians. His father Sidney Chilton was a jazz musician, so music was in his blood. Chilton joined the band The Devilles as a teen in 1966. The band was soon renamed the Box Tops and when Chilton was only 16 years old, they had a number one hit with “The … Continue reading

A Tribute to Alan Menken

When the Academy Award nominations were announced a few weeks ago, I discovered some surprises in the “Best Original Song” category. Two songs from “Princess and the Frog” made the list. I didn’t hide my lack of enthusiasm for Randy Newman’s work on Disney’s latest animated feature. I found nothing particularly repellant about the songs in the movie, but almost more importantly, I especially didn’t find anything memorable about them. As I said before, I couldn’t recall a single song from the movie even as I walked out of the theater minutes after the credits rolled. Do I just have … Continue reading

52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

Cooler Than the Jonas Brothers?

Last Friday at four o‘clock in the morning, my husband and I dragged all five of our children out of bed and went down to Bryant park in New York City to see the one. . .the only. . .the incredible. . . JONAS BROTHERS!!!!! Yes, even my three year old twins can sing a very unique version of S.O.S. and my son thinks they are the greatest thing since sliced bread because after all, they are home schooled. My five year old knows all the words to Camp Rock and well–what can I say? My spouse and I know … Continue reading

Bye Bye Birdie (1963)

“Bye Bye Birdie” has been one of the most famous plays, and then famous films, ever made. It’s one of those classics that everyone has seen and admits is a part of our modern culture. So when I popped it in, I was expecting something so marvelous, so witty, wonderful, hysterical beyond belief – and was sadly disappointed at every turn. I can’t for the life of me understand why this thing got the following it did. Essentially, it’s a satire on the effect Elvis’s drafting into the Army had on the nation. Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) has been drafted, … Continue reading

Tarzan (1999)

A young family comprised of a husband, wife, and baby boy are forced to flee their burning ship and escape in a life boat. Coming ashore in a jungle region, they make a home for themselves by building a rather nice tree house and are determined to make the most of their lives together. But then along comes Sabor, the huge jungle cat, and kills both mother and father. The child was asleep under a blanket, and so escaped the attack. Nearby, Kala, a female gorilla voiced by Glenn Close, is mourning the loss of her own son. Sabor took … Continue reading

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)

I can think of no more beloved childhood icon than Winnie the Pooh. Based on the 1920s books by A.A. Milne and made even cuter by Walt Disney, children everywhere know and love this adorable, if somewhat vague bear. In “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” the first full length film to feature our bear, we meet the whole complement of animals who live in the Hundred Acre Wood: Eeyore the donkey, Kanga and Roo, a kangaroo and her joey, Rabbit, Piglet, and Owl – but most of all, Winnie the Pooh. They are all stuffed animals belonging to … Continue reading

The Song Remembers When

I was humming along with “Hi-Ho”, from Disney’s “Snow White” soundtrack which happened to play on my MP3 player a few days ago when I suddenly found my mind transported back about 12 years to the last time I heard the song. It was on a work’s outing – believe it or not – to Edinburgh (I was living in the UK at the time). A couple of co-workers and I decided to tag along with a student weekend bus trip – we worked at our local University – up to Scotland’s beautiful capital city. We tagged along on the … Continue reading

Cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo!

“All around the kitchen, cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo,” starts the song for which this Dan Zanes DVD is named. The first ever DVD from Dan Zanes and Friends, “All Around the Kitchen” features a live concert as well as some of Dan’s music videos. The concert footage was taken at New York’s Knitting Factory and most of the videos can be seen on Playhouse Disney, Sesame Street, or NOGGIN. “All Around the Kitchen” is fun to watch as you can participate along with the concert audience. Your child will also love seeing his/her favorite Dan Zanes videos anytime. The Show At the start … Continue reading
