Alternative Airports

In my previous blog I mentioned that great airfare deals are available (even during the busy holiday travel season) provided you remain “flexible” with your travel plans. In addition to being flexible with your departure and return dates and times, it’s also helpful to consider flying in or out of alternate airports. For example, I live near two major airports in Wisconsin—–Milwaukee and Madison. So when I can’t get an affordable fare when I plug in one, I then check fares at the other. Some alternative airports are quite convenient; others are a stretch. For instance, I could fly out … Continue reading

Candy Hang-Overs

I wrote the other day (with great glee and jubilation) about the onset of the “candy season”—Halloween seems to signal the start of the season of sweets for me and I actually ache and crave those chocolatey little morsels. But, fast forward a couple days and now that I have picked up more candy wrappers than a sanitation worker, and I’m starting to have some doubts… Candy wrappers in the washing machine, candy wrappers on the counter, and most annoying of all—candy wrappers in the candy bowl. The four of us (and our perpetual extras) have definitely been eating our … Continue reading

Marie’s Thud Heard Round the World

Ouch! That’s gotta hurt. No. I’m not referring to the painful drop “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Marie Osmond took after her samba routine. I’m referring to the scores the judges flashed when the singer came to. Osmond got 21 out of 30 possible points for her show-stopping samba. Actually, it was what occurred after her samba that stopped the show. Right before the judges started to give their verbal assessments of her dance with partner Jonathan Roberts, a visibly winded Osmond collapsed on the ballroom floor. Roberts and host Tom Bergeron leaned down to assist her before sending the … Continue reading

“Desperate Housewives” Controversial Dig On Filipinos Causes Ire

Do you remember the scene from Sunday’s season premiere of “Desperate Housewives” where Teri Hatcher’s character, Susan, goes in for a doctor’s appointment and is stunned when the gynecologist suggests she may be going through menopause? “Listen, Susan, I know for a lot of women the word ‘menopause’” has negative connotations. You hear ‘aging,’ ‘brittle bones,’ ‘loss of sexual desire,’” the doctor tells her. “OK, before we go any further, can I check these diplomas? Just to make sure they aren’t, like, from some med school in the Philippines?” Susan retorts. That exchange, which I’m sure show writers meant to … Continue reading

“Dancing With The Stars” Needs A New Co-Host

Samantha Harris should have known better. The E! News correspondent and Dancing with the Stars co-host stated publicly (on numerous occasions) that she planned to appear on the popular ABC dance contest until mid-October, that’s when Harris was due to give birth to her first child. Tonight is the big season premiere of the show and Harris will be a no show… with good reason. Her new daughter decided she didn’t want to share her mom with the rest of the country. According to E! News, 33-year-old Harris and her husband, financial wholesaler Michael Hess, welcomed daughter Josselyn Sydney Hess … Continue reading

Ready, Set, Fly!

Our family does a lot more driving in the summer than flying (we travel more by plane during the winter months). However, judging by the huge amount of bad press the airline industry has been getting over the past few months you have to wonder how many travelers willingly opt to drive (or just stay home) rather than endure the headaches that come with flying. Given that my family lives in Hawaii, flying is a necessity in order for us to see each other. That said I have compiled a list of some tips that have served us well as … Continue reading

Has “The View” Already Found Star’s Replacement?

What a week it has been on ABC’s “The View.” On Tuesday, co-host Star Jones Reynolds made a surprise on-air announcement that she would not be returning for the show’s 10th season. Within hours PEOPLE magazine reported that Jones-Reynolds was in her words “fired” by ABC. Then, less than 24 hours later show creator, Barbara Walters told a live audience that she felt betrayed by Jones-Reynolds comments and as a result, the co-host of nine years would no longer be appearing on the “The View” effective immediately. Now, word comes that Jones-Reynolds’s seat (which barely had time to get cold) … Continue reading
