Soy and Hot Flashes

If you have suffered from hot flashes, you know you would give almost anything for a cure. Some say soy is the answer while others say no. I know when I first started experiencing hot flashes, I tried soy milk. Actually, it didn’t taste that bad, but then the hot flashes subsided a bit and I quit drinking it. But, did it work? One study at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine said that soy isoflavone supplements didn’t work. Researchers spent $3 million and two years following women ages 45 to 60 within five years of menopause. The … Continue reading

Tweaking Your Plans

I try really hard to never use the excuse, “I don’t have time” when it comes to exercising. Because most often that is exactly what it is…an excuse. But what happens when it is reality? Let’s face it, we all deal with days and sometimes weeks where every single second of the day seems to be squeezed out of us. It can be detrimental to your fitness routine. I had been doing really well, exercising for 30 minutes every morning and sometimes even getting in a mile walk in the evening. But then life happened and suddenly it became nearly … Continue reading

10 Ways to Push Your Teen Away: Expect Them to Act Like Adults (Part 9)

As I continue my “10 Ways to Push Your Teen Away,” in part 9 we are going to consider how we sometimes expect our teens to act like adults. One of the clearest ways we do this is by making statements like, “Grow up!” or “Why don’t you act your age?” I have made similar statements to my own teens. One day my oldest son responded to my request that he act his own age with “I am!” And you know what? He was right. Take some time to really think about statements like that. When we tell our teens … Continue reading

10 Ways to Push Your Teen Away: Focus Only on the Wrong (Part 2)

In this part of my series on “10 Ways to Push Your Teen Away,” we are going to consider how we as parents can sometimes focus only on the wrong. In other words, we fail to see the good things because we allow the not-so-good things to become greater. Anyone with a teenager has some degree of difficulty. Some teens are just easier than others. And parents can make the mistake of assuming that it is only based on parenting. In other words, if their teen is a good kid they have done something right but if their teen isn’t, … Continue reading

I Must Exercise

In the hustle and bustle of my busy life sometimes I forget to take care of myself. Everyday it seems like my to do list gets longer and longer and time for me gets pushed farther and farther to the bottom. Winter is especially hard, I get a little depressed in the winter, nothing bad, just a little SAD (seasonal affective disorder) but one major downside is that I get very lazy. Everything becomes just too much work. My house falls apart, I don’t cook and I certainly don’t exercise. All I want to do is lay on the couch … Continue reading

How Much Money Do You Make?

Knowing that some fast food chains are handing out $5,000 signing bonuses to employees made me jealous… ahem! I mean curious. Curious about how many non-glamorous professions make up the top tier of highest paying jobs in America. If you think actors, professional athletes, politicians and Wall Street wheelers and dealers comprise the top spots, you might be surprised. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the professionals that raked in the most dough in 2010 were: 1. Anesthesiologists = $166,400+ 2. Internists = $166,400+ 3. OB/GYN = $166,400+ 4. Oral Surgeons = $166,400+ 5. Orthodontists = $166,400+ 6. General … Continue reading

Am I Being TOO Motherly?

My husband’s kidney disease is wearing on him. He is always mentioning how he is going to have to go on dialysis if it fails. I think he is more worried about that than he was with his cancer. Now I understand the idea of dialysis or kidney transplant are scary, believe me I get it. If you have never checked out my cancer blog I can tell you that what a doctor says to you sticks with you and causes a lot of stress. In my case when my oncologist met me for the first time and said he … Continue reading

The Grass Is Green Enough on This Side, Thank You

There was a time in my marriage when I thought the grass was greener on the other side. Those were probably some of the most difficult moments in my marriage. I was disillusioned and he was disappointing to me. I had expectations and when they weren’t met, I thought someone else could better meet them. This happened at different points in my marriage. Each time I allowed myself to think the grass was greener on the other side—whether there was a literal person I was thinking of or just the “idea” of a person—it caused greater distance between my husband … Continue reading

Teen Weight Loss Surgery and Insurance Coverage

Weight loss surgery might be an option for adults who are morbidly obese. What about for teenagers? Most private health insurance companies will not cover this type of procedure. Teenagers who are covered by Medicaid or CHIP have a better chance of having their weight loss surgery covered. Every surgery, no matter how big or small, comes with risk. While certain kinds of weight loss surgeries may be a recommended option for some adults who are morbidly obese, this doesn’t mean that it is completely and entirely safe in all cases. Not every private health insurance plan will cover this … Continue reading

Marilyn Tavenner is the New Medicare Chief

President Obama has nominated someone new to take over as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Previously, that position was held by Dr. Donald M. Berwick. Now, it will be held by Marilyn Tavenner, instead. Until recently, Dr. Donald Berwick was the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He was selected by President Obama for that position. This nomination was controversial, and so, he was never actually confirmed by the Senate. Some Republicans felt that Dr. Donald Berwick was in favor of health care rationing. Many Democrats, on the other hand, note that … Continue reading
