IIHS Finds Half of All Booster Seats Do Not Fit Properly

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently evaluated 83 booster seats. They found that around half of them do not fit children properly. It might be time to check and see how well your child’s booster seat fits, and what the IIHS thinks of it. Booster seats are a slightly more “grown up” version of “infant seats”, or “convertible car seats”. All are designed to safely restrain babies and young children with a five-point harness. It helps to ensure the physical safety of infants and small children in case the vehicle they are riding in is involved in a traffic … Continue reading

Juggling Your Kids Activities

The kids are going back to school and now the juggling act begins. I know as a single mother making sure Hailey was able to get to all the places she needed to go while still working full time was a challenge. I have no idea how single mothers with multiple children manage to do it, but not only do they do it, they make it look easy. Once school starts so do the activities, sports, dance, after school activities, going to a friend’s house to do a project, it seems that every day there is somewhere new they need … Continue reading

Not Mom of the Year

I have failed. I’m not going to be Mom of the Year again this year. Finally I am OK with that. When I was first divorced the guilt I had for tearing my child’s family apart made me too lenient. I always excused bad behavior, blamed it on the divorce, gave in and looked the other way. No more. Now that my daughter is a teenager it is more important than ever to be her Mom and not her friend. It is harder to be the bad guy now. The tears when she was 10 cleared much quicker than the … Continue reading

Crossfit Helps Me with Stress Levels

So, my stress levels have been high lately, and, thanks to the help of some people at work, I have found a new way to release much of the tension and stress… Through Crossfit. If you’re not familiar with Crossfit, it is an approach to fitness that is intense and exhausting. It is cardio and weightlifting all rolled into one. And it’s helping me get through the tough time I’ve been having. I’ve blogged in the past about how exercise (and sleep) can aid in stress management, but I’ve never quite experienced anything like this before. Crossfit combines basic movements … Continue reading

Maintain Family Traditions

Family traditions are important but many times when children hit their teenage years, they are sometimes stopped. I think there are two main reasons for this. One being that parents assume the teens are “too old” for those activities. Another reason being that our teens don’t act interested or they even come right out and say they aren’t interested, so we just go with it. First of all you can never be too old for family traditions. These are special activities that are unique to your family. They give teens a sense of security and our children need that no … Continue reading

Using a Timer to Stay Focused

Time management is a subject that is often on the mind of those of us that work from home. How do we get our work done when there are so many other things that we could be doing, and all of those other things are within easy reach? One potential solution is to use a timer. It does not need to be a fancy timer, it can be as simple as the twisty one that you have in your kitchen that you use to tell you when it is time to take the cookies out of the oven. My kitchen … Continue reading

The Curse of the Calendar

I really like to keep things real. So although I have a lot of positive things to say about working from home, I have to confess there are some definite cons to it. I had just finished filling in only half of the calendar for August and I couldn’t believe it. How did this happen? When at one time I would see lots of white space, I was now seeing nothing but black. It was one thing after another written in…football, driver’s education, orthodontic appointments, hair appointments and meetings. Ugh, the curse of the calendar. I have always been a … Continue reading

Love Your Teen Even When They Are Unlovable

I really love reading. Not all of my children have developed the same voracious appetite for it but I still try to find reading material that will appeal to them. Sometimes I pick up something that is not necessarily for entertainment but for their character. Most of the time when I get a book that is geared toward character development; I will hand it to my child and strongly encourage them to read it. Yesterday I picked up a book from the library that I was going to hand to my daughter but then a revelation hit me. Why not … Continue reading

Parenting Without Regrets

This weekend my husband and I enjoyed a night of hanging out with friends. A bunch of us get together once-a-month to share a light Bible study, eat, talk and laugh. I always walk away from these times feeling so refreshed. This particular time I walked away not only feeling refreshed but feeling very inspired. The study was on endurance and one of the questions posed to us was, “What is something in your life that you can say you don’t have regrets about?” I really liked that question. Sometimes we focus too much on the regrets in our life … Continue reading

I Guess I’m Not That Cool

Apparently I have been delusional in some of my thinking. I have been convinced that for a mom I am pretty cool. I text, I have a Facebook account and I enjoy loud music. I have always felt somewhat connected to my children’s world and honestly, have always felt welcomed. When my oldest son was in middle school, he had no problem being seen with me. I am very easy to talk to and his friends would enjoy having conversations with me. He didn’t mind when I showed up at his school, he would walk with me down the hallway … Continue reading
