Strictly Ballroom (1992)

“Strictly Ballroom” is an Australian-made spoof of the ballroom dance arena, and it’s a lot of fun. Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio) is the son of a champion ballroom dancer, and she has raised him with the same ambitions. He wants to win the championship, but along the way, he started experimenting with steps of his own that weren’t strictly ballroom, and he demonstrated them at a lower-level meet, throwing the judges into a tizzy, nearly giving his mother a nervous breakdown, and causing everyone to wonder about the future of the sport. Liz, his partner (Gia Carides) refuses to dance … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for January 7-13

Last week was the first full week of 2008. Resolutions were set and being tackled full force. Which meant Aimee and I were busy bringing you a bunch of interesting articles. In case you missed any part of last week due to tending your resolutions, here’s what we wrote on: Monday, January 7 Why Does My Pet Play in His Water Bowl? If you have a cat like my Mr. Meow who definitely plays in his water bowl, Aimee provided insight into this mysterious phenomenon. Is Your Cat Stressed? Aimee listed some signs to look for that your cat may … Continue reading

Love & the Stars: Is There Something to It?

As I admitted when I wrote about pet horoscopes, I’m kind of interested in astrology. I think there are some things it can help explain. A few years back I got a huge book called The Power of Birthdays, Stars, & Numbers: The Complete Personology Reference Guide. (When I say “huge” I mean as in size, not that it was a best-seller. I don’t know if it was or not.) Anyway, it lists all 366 birthdays of the year. Using part astrology, part numerology, and even some psychology it profiles each personality. The result is an overview of who you … Continue reading

Stars Making History on Screen and Off

In the battle over the longest-running role in ad industry Captain Kirk has put the smackdown on Fat Albert. They are two men you rarely see in the same room together let alone the same TV spot, but William Shatner and Bill Cosby recently battled it out for top banana of television commercials. Shatner just celebrated his 10th anniversary with the online travel company Priceline.com and has now eclipsed Cosby (who remarkably was up for the same role) as longest running pitchman for a name brand company. Priceline execs say the former Captain Kirk beat out the former Cliff Huxtable … Continue reading

What’s in the Stars for Your Pets in ‘08?

That’s what I wanted to know after writing about pet horoscopes. It was fun to see which stars my pets’ dispositions might fall under since I don’t know any of their exact birthdates, but what about a year ahead forecast? Was there such a beast? The Elusive Year Ahead Forecast I’ve found plenty for humans. Those are easy. But I haven’t come across any year ahead outlooks for pets. I thought I did when I found Petroscopes, but upon closer inspection their weekly and yearly horoscopes haven’t been updated since 2005. (But their general description of each Zodiac sign is … Continue reading

Arthur’s Really Helpful Bedtime Stories

I’m not sure how helpful Arthur’s Really Helpful Bedtime Stories are, but I do know that our copy is well worn. Marc Brown’s twists on familiar fairy tales kept my children amused and asking for more. The book contains ten familiar fairy tales but told with characters from the world of Arthur. Not only do the characters like D.W. take the place of the fairytale characters like Little Red Riding Hood, but they maintain their own personalities as well. So we have D.W. being stubborn and saving Grandma Thora from the wolf. In “The Three Little Pigs” Binky sides with … Continue reading

The Holidays in Hollywood—-How Are Your Favorite Stars Celebrating?

There’s nothing like reminiscing about Christmases past… and that’s exactly what Martha Stewart did on her TV show today. The domestic diva shared with viewers a special holiday memory she made back in 2005—during her stint in prison. I’m not kidding. Stewart took time during her daytime TV show today to share one of her fondest memories of her stay in a West Virginia prison. Apparently the crafty Christmas lover made the most of her time in her prison pottery class. That’s where she molded ornate clay forms of the baby Jesus, Joseph, Mary, three camels, donkeys, angels—an entire nativity … Continue reading

Jessica Simpson–Dallas Cowboys’ Public Enemy No. 1 (STILL)

And here I thought Brett Favre was Dallas’ No. 1 enemy. If you read my previous blog then you know that ex-Newlywed Jessica Simpson is not exactly a welcome addition to Tony Romo’s life as far as Dallas Cowboy football fans are concerned. And now it appears she’s not very popular with Romo’s teammates either… or is she? Yesterday, Dallas’ most outspoken player Terrell Owens provided reporters with his own take on Sunday’s Romo/Simpson debacle. (The Cowboys lost 10-6 to the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pro-Bowler had what was statistically the worst game of his career, all while his buxom … Continue reading

My Favorite Pet Blogs from the Past Year

Below is a list of my favorite articles I wrote during the past year, often with an explanation of what made them memorable. Five Non-Cash Ways to Help Animals/Shelters this Holiday Season: This was my first article to have a comment left on it. Is It Ever Okay to Kick a Dog?: This was my first article to ever get stars. The BMK Fund: This practice is very near and dear to my heart and it was neat to have a platform such as blogging for Families.com to share it on. How to Put Your Shopping Dollars to Work Helping … Continue reading

More Fallout from the Jennifer Love Hewitt Bikini Photos

Much has been made of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s now-famous bikini pics; more specifically about the harsh comments made about the size of the actress’s butt. The critical comments targeted at Hewitt and the discussions raised about a celebrity culture obsessed with weight inspired a number of entertainment magazines to splash Hewitt’s unflattering photos on the cover of their publications. For example, PEOPLE Magazine claims they “got the story behind Hewitt’s experience,” (pun intended I’m sure) after she was widely ridiculed over the infamous photographs taken of her in a bikini during a recent Hawaiian vacation. The magazine makes it appear … Continue reading
