Up until a couple months ago I was using my ISP’s built-in radio (Comcast’s Rhapsody Radio), but it started acting unreliably. It’d stop all of a sudden or have sign in conflicts and kick me out. Which was a shame because I liked a lot of their stations, such as their Classic Soul, Classical Piano, Essential Classical, Holiday Music (at Christmas), Latin Dance, and World Picks.
Exasperated, I went in search of something else. I really dig listening to music on my computer, not having to change CDs (or buy them), or getting annoyed with local radio station commercials. That’s how I stumbled across Pandora Radio from the Music Genome Project.
Fellow blogger Hava Lyon wrote all about why she thinks it’s fantastic, how easy it is to get set up with, it’s premise, and the basics of how to use it (see Pandora Music Player). I’m just going to add a few more things to the list.
Pandora Rocks, Rolls, Swings, and Stomps Because…
• It’s free. (Okay, Hava already covered this, but it was worth mentioning again because it blows my mind something so awesome is at anyone’s disposal for no cost.) But it’s not just free on your computer: you can also listen to your Pandora stations free on your cell phone. (For Sprint and AT&T customers.)
• Similar to Families.com’s MySite that lets you create a profile of yourself, you can also do that on Pandora. Create a bio to tell people about yourself, bookmark songs and artists, and even bookmark other Pandora listeners. (To learn more about MySite, see Do You Have a MySite?)
• If you visit other people’s profiles, you can see what station they’re listening to (if they’re logged on), what artists or songs they’ve bookmarked, and leave comments for them. (Another way to make friends via the Internet!)
• Pandora also has genre stations to pick from with categories such as Country, Rock, Oldies, Latin, Hip Hop, and Classical (just to name a few).
• I love Irish folk music and I was able to find a bunch of cool songs on Pandora! (And I recently created a holiday station and am so far psyched with the selections coming up there too. But even if I don’t like a song, all I have to do is give it a thumbs down and I’ll never have to hear it again.)
