Yesterday, Spiderman 3 opened all over the country and kicks off what is likely to be a hot summer of great movies. It’s been many years since I saw a summer at the box office that awaits us this year. Among those top features are Peter Parker returning in the third installment of Spiderman, Harry Potter in the fifth film in this beloved series Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix and for Disney fans, already excited by Meet the Robinsons from earlier this spring will be delighted to see Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner coming back to finish their journey in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
Summer Lovin’!
The summer love for the silver screen is long documented, especially with kids getting out of school for the summer, temperatures soaring and the delight we take in seeing movie magic come to life on the screen. The popularity of Harry Potter is undeniable and Spiderman broke box office records when the first movie was released and then again when the second came out. The third began breaking records before it even premiered.
Pirates, on the other hand, was a phenomenal and delightful surprise when it was first released. Typically, we see movies turned into merchandise, rides and more – it’s a little unusual to have a ride inspire a film. Not only did this classic Disney ride inspire the film, Pirates of the Caribbean, but the film then surpassed all expectations.
Will Turner & Jack Sparrow
The films have all the right ingredients. Will Turner, the waif rescued from a shipwreck as a boy and a daughter of a Royal Governor. Their stations in life were extremely different, but their affection was undeniable. Throw in a wildly quirky character like Jack Sparrow and pirates trying to overcome a curse and you have a wild ride that doesn’t require any affection for the amusement park attraction to enjoy.
In the second film, we saw Will and Elizabeth’s wedding interrupted as Will was arrested for piracy. He escaped and then, another wild adventure awaited our erstwhile heroes and lovers. When we last saw them, Will and Elizabeth were questioning their own love, but not their determination to retrieve Jack Sparrow from World’s End – can the third installment live up to all the hype and promise of the first two?
On May 24th, we’ll find out.
Will you be seeing any of these films at the theater this summer?
