While being a parent is one of the greatest joys one can experience, there are certainly days that we all struggle with this wonderful and challenging job we are faced with. The everyday tasks of mothering are often monotonous and mundane. You spend the day cooking and cleaning, breaking up fights and running from one thing to the next, only to start all over the next day. There is no one there to cheer you on, or to tell you what a good job you are doing. Nobody sees the 8 loads of laundry you did, or the piles of dishes you got put away. If they saw your home they would probably think a bunch of zoo animals lived there, or at least that’s how it feels sometimes.
There are times when you get so caught up in the mundane that you forget to enjoy the little things that go along with it. When your child takes your hand to show you the butterfly he found on his favorite bush this morning; when he smiles and says I love you for no particular reason; when you see him sleeping peacefully on the couch in the middle of his favorite movie. These are the moments of joy as a parent; when you see the bigger picture and know that you are a part of something so much greater than yourself.
You have a responsibility unlike any other. You are raising a rising generation. What an amazing opportunity that we have been trusted with as parents of these little children. When you get caught up in the cooking and cleaning and the monotony of every day life, remember that you are part of a great work. The work is long, the work is hard, at times even unbearable, but in the end, you see that you have accomplished something amazing, and that is truly what motherhood is all about.
