Are you organized and love a good time? Then becoming a party planner might be the perfect career for you.
Think about the types of parties that you would be interested in planning. Do you want to focus on one particular type or could you expand your business to include all types such as office parties,
birthday parties, corporate events and weddings.
It’s important to establish from the beginning where your focus is going to be. Because the next step is determining what your startup costs are going to be. The more types of parties you want to plan, the higher your startup costs are going to be.
So if money is an issue, then you might want to start small and eventually allow your business to grow.
In determining startup costs, you also need to know the specific services you will provide. Services could include catering, entertainment, invitations and decorations. It would help to get in contact with someone who already has an established business as a party planner to get some tips and ideas.
Now before you decide to go full-fledge into your party planning career, you want to make sure you understand how marketing, accounting and sales works. If you don’t already have experience it might be beneficial to first get some. Or you might enroll in a class that will provide you the education you need.
Remember, a party planner doesn’t just enjoy the planning part of this business; there is a financial component to it that must be understood if you don’t want to see it fail.
Once you are ready to get your business off the ground, you need to start marketing yourself. Social media, phone calls, putting up fliers, developing a website or creating an advertisement to go in your local paper are just some ideas.
Be sure to have a portfolio of some of your work and business cards with your contact information which can help draw in customers. Of course, sometimes the best way to start is with family and friends. They can begin to pass the word, which is sometimes one of the best marketing tools at your disposal.
People love to have parties but not everyone has the time or creativity to plan one, so becoming a party planner just might be your perfect career!
