Passing Phases

So my 13-year-old daughter really surprised me yesterday. I was sitting in the living room when she walked in with something rolled up. She had a smile on her face. I asked her what it was and she said it was her poster of Justin Bieber. She didn’t like him anymore and was going to give not only her poster but her CD of Justin Bieber to her friend.

I had to chuckle. It was only a couple of months ago that I wrote about my daughter’s obsession over Justin Bieber. He seemed to have awakened something inside her. However that infatuation burned out quickly and now I am left to wonder who the next one will be.

Teens definitely go through passing phases. Maybe it’s just my children but I have noticed that it happens more often with my daughter. One week she likes this color, the next week she hates it. One week she eats this, the next week she says she never liked it. Can any mom of a girl relate?

I remember back to my teen years and the passing phases I went through. It went from Shaun Cassidy to John Tyler of Duran, Duran and eventually on to the Beastie Boys. I have to laugh when I think back. They were all very different from one another. Shaun Cassidy was softer, John Tyler was just cool and the Beastie Boys? Well they were just bad.

I somehow managed to make it through and I know my children will make it through their passing phases, too. It’s just that sometimes it’s really hard to keep up with them. From one day to the next I just never know what to expect.

I guess I might as well get used to this and buckle in for the ride. I have a few more years of other passing phases to get through. It’s time to hang on.
