Preschools around here open a week after public and private schools do. For parents with children in multiple grade levels the staggered start means having to keep at least one child occupied while the others are in class.
If you are looking for ways to pass time with your preschooler in the days leading up to the start of his new school year, then consider the following fun and educational activities:
COTTON BALL SNOWMAN
Find different size plastic cups or round containers (you could also use canned goods) for preschoolers to trace. You’ll need three different sizes. On paper have your child trace three circles in stacking order with the biggest on the bottom. Then, have your preschooler fill in the circles with cotton balls and a little bit of glue. You can simplify the process by squeezing out glue in the circles and having your child press the cotton balls in place. Use buttons, macaroni or foam stickers for the snowman’s eyes, nose, and mouth.
OLD CARDS GET NEW A LIFE
Gather old greeting cards and make holes around the outer edge with a hole punch. Take pieces of yarn and add a small drop of glue on the ends. Allow to dry. Then, have your child weave the yarn around the outer edge of the card to add a decorative touch. Next, paint the front of card with glue and add glitter.
ROCK PAINTING
Take a walk around your neighborhood or to a local park and collect a variety of rocks along the way. Have your children help you wipe the rocks at home and then paint them with washable paint. You could also make a rock person by using one large rock for the body and smaller rocks for arms and legs. In addition, you could embellish each rock with glitter glue, sequins, yarn or stickers.
