Patio Party

What did we do to deserve this? For some unexplained reason we have experienced record-breaking warm temperatures (in the 80s, which is practically unheard for the state this early in the year) on two consecutive weekends. The beautiful weather has drawn people outdoors in droves. Take a walk around our neighborhood at dusk and you’d think there was a huge block party going on. The homeowners who aren’t busy tending to their gardens are grilling dinner on their decks and patios.

Which leads me to the point of this blogs–patios. Most people think that an outdoor party is simply not the same if you don’t have a deck. Not true. If you live in a deck-less house there is no reason hide your head in shame. With just the smallest amount of effort you can transform the most cheerless slab of concrete into party central. If you aren’t a party animal–that’s fine too—-your patio can become an outdoor dining room or a cozy retreat. All you have to do is use your creativity. Additions as simple as a few potted plants and a couple of chairs can make the area warm and inviting.

The possibilities are seemingly endless, though it’s a good idea to settle on a specific function to make designing a bit easier. So, first, define the space. Do you want your patio to be a dining room, a romantic retreat, or an outdoor library? Once you answer that question you can pick your furniture—-be it a wicker rocker, a table and chair set, a swing, or a couple of lounge chairs.

If you want to add some color to the area with plants and flowers you may consider purchasing a sunshade, especially if your patio is exposed to the afternoon sun. Bamboo and ficus do well in warmer climates.

Speaking of color, when decorating your patio you may want to stick with a simple color palette rather than mixing a host of different shades, especially if you are working with a very limited space. Pick one color theme, then use throw pillows or a small rug to add a splash of color.

As far as lighting goes, think candles for tables and perhaps a string of white lights around a potted plant to add a hint of romance. You could even place a piece of art on your patio and use a spotlight to illuminate it at night.

What is your favorite part of your patio?
