Paying More At The Pump… And For Pizza?

How much are you paying for a gallon of gas these days? According to AAA, gas prices set a record high on Monday, averaging $3.07 for a gallon of self-serve regular in the United States. In Vail, Colorado the price of a gallon of regular unleaded is hovering around $4.

The spike in gas has me clutching my pizza coupons very tightly. After all, the high price of gas is bound to create a domino effect that will soon mean we will all be paying more for the pizza we get delivered to our doors via gas guzzling pizza delivery vehicles. Or will it?

In a move that has environmentalists buzzing, Domino’s Pizza has begun testing delivering its pizzas using ZAP all-electric vehicles supplied to them by The Electric Vehicle Company. According to news sources, last Sunday, Domino’s made dozens of pizza deliveries around the Las Vegas area in the ZAP electric vehicles.

ZAP or Zero Air Pollution vehicles have been touted for their unique styling (they look like roller skates on steroids) and their environmentally friendly design. According to manufacturers, the ZAP XEBRA is the only street-legal, 100 percent electric car that plugs into any 110-volt outlet — the same outlet that is found in and outside every home, garage and office. The XEBRA is considered as a “city car” as is capable of driving up to 40 miles per hour. The electric car can travel about 40 miles per charge depending on the driving conditions. What’s more, according to its designers, fueling of ZAP vehicles cost on average about 13 cents per mile while maintenance costs one-third that of gas fueled vehicles due to the reduction of moving parts, less wear and replacements.

Dominos executives say their decision to test the electric cars as delivery vehicles was a matter of common sense. By doing so, not only does the company help preserve the environment, but with gas in Vegas hovering around $3.15 a gallon, driving ZAPs door-to-door helps Dominos put a cap on pizza prices.
