In my next series of articles, I will discuss what I feel are the perks and concerns of teaching in a public school system. I will address each of these areas from A to Z. I love my job and feel that the perks well override any concerns. However, like with all jobs, there are topics about which I can complain. All topics addressed will be on a personal level for me. A perk for me may be a concern for someone else. I welcome your thoughts and opinions! In this article, I wish to describe what I feel is a perk for me. A is for assemblies.
Assemblies are a wonderful part of the school setting. We do not have an assembly often. Therefore, this adds to the magic and excitement of them! The best assemblies are award recognition days and students performances.
I love watching our students work together across grade levels to perform for their parents and peers. The older students’ eyes shine as they realize how the younger children are looking up to them for their ‘public performance’. Performances by the younger children give them a feeling of being ‘big’ and important. Parents fill the gymnasium and bring with them cameras and video recorders. The ten-minute production could not get more attention if it were a Broadway play.
Recognition and awards assemblies are good because they allow the students to gain confidence and feel proud about their accomplishments. Our student body is always very supportive of one another. My school has a CDC class of handicap children. These children are cheered for and commended on their accomplishments by their peers.
Assemblies are always special because they unite the school as a whole. Primary teachers rarely have an opportunity to leave their rooms and see the events happening in the upper grade classrooms. Assemblies give us the feeling of working and growing together.
