Today’s letter for the perks of public education is D. For me D stands for diversity. Teaching public education allows me the opportunity to meet many different types of children and families.
Not only is diversity discussed in terms of ethnicity and race but also background and economical means. Children come from many different backgrounds and home situations.
It is very interesting to see how differently children think and problem solve. Kindergarten students are still greatly influenced by their parents and preschool, if they attended one. The school or teachers have not influenced the children. Therefore, it is very easy to gain a good understanding of the child’s history and experiences through his conversations, thoughts, and drawings.
Schools are now greatly being affected by children who originated from other countries. Our present kindergarten has a little girl enrolled that moved here with her family from China. We also have an adopted Chinese girl enrolled in next year’s kindergarten class. These children can teach others much about our world.
Teaching in the public school system has allowed me to meet all different types of children and families. I work with children from single parents homes, split homes, and children living with grandparents. Some children are the only children in their homes while other children have many siblings. It is also interesting to see the difference in the actions of children that have older siblings and the children who are the oldest siblings.
Some teachers may feel that the diversity of learners in a classroom is more of a concern of public education than a perk. While it can be difficult to work with so many different personalities and learning styles, it also keeps the day exciting and different. My day would be rather boring if all of the children were exactly the same.
