My perks in public education A to Z series are up to the letter H. My perks so far have mainly been based on my students and career. Today my perk is more personal for me. Yes, I will admit it! One great big perk of teaching public education is the hours! For me H stands for hours.
Teaching is not for everyone. However, if you can do it the hours are great for moms. I put in a lot of time outside of my required span. But the extra hours are often at home of at my convenience. My children are getting to the age where I can take them with me to school if I need to complete a few tasks after hours.
The required work hours, for me 7:35- 3:05, are great. I take my children to the sitter each morning no earlier than 6:45. I can then be there to pick them up by 4:00 and still have daylight hours to play outside. We share long Christmas vacations together and enjoy two months in the summer.
I do not teach for the hours. No one in his or her right mind would. However, we are discussing perks and the time off is definitely one of them.
When I was pregnant with each of my children, I could have taken off one year with maternity leave (which I did not) and still have my position saved for me.
When my children are attending my school, I will already be there for the school events. Parties and field trips will be challenging since I will not be able to leave my class to attend my children’s class.
Teaching has many rewards. Some of them are perks for my career and others are perks for my family and personal life.
