Perks of Public Education: M = Music

My school, along with the previous school at which I taught, both have a music program. I feel that music is an important element to education. Public schools with a good music program and a good music teacher are blessed.

Some elementary schools have a chorus and a band. One of our local school’s chorus programs recently sang at a Nashville competition. The music programs at the schools in my area perform Christmas and other special programs for the parents.

A good music teacher gets the students out of their desks. She has them moving around the room. The children should enjoy going to music class. They should learn sounds that are repetitive and fun. The children should be able to sing the songs at home with their parents.

Some of the music teachers offer piano, guitar, and other instrument lessons to the children. Not all of the children would be able to experience singing and music if it were not for the public school systems.

Music is also popular in most lower grade classrooms. We learn songs and chants to enhance our education. Most primary teachers have a large CD collection including titles from Jack Hartman and Dr. Jean.

Music stimulates the mind and makes learning fun. Music encourages children to use their bodies and move. My students ask for specific songs and dances on a daily basis. Because of music in my classroom, they learned the value of the coins and the presidents on front of each coin before I ever taught them to the children.

Music can also have a very soothing effect on students. We listen to soft relaxation music during journal writing and silent reading times. The music tends to help keep the children focused on their work and calm.

Music is a great asset to education. If a music program is not available at school, teachers should ensure that music is used in their curriculum!
