Yes, I do actually know that the spelling in the title is wrong. However, there are very few words that begin with the letter “X” that I could use for my series. Therefore, I decided to go with a word that begins with the sounding of the word “X”. So for this article, I chose xtracurricular (extracurricular) activities as a perk for public education.
This perk for public education usually takes place outside of the typical school day. Extracurricular activities are activities that are “extra” for education. They are not taught in a classroom as a regular subject during the school day. However, they are usually lead by a teacher or school staff member. In addition, they are not required for students to take. Joining an extracurricular activity is optional for students. Students either sign-up, try-out, or must be elected for the activity.
Extracurricular activities are often thought of as sports. These include activities such as baseball, cheerleading, soccer, and more. However, extracurricular activities do not have to be physical or labeled as a sport.
An extracurricular activity can be serving on a committee or counsel. Some popular activities such as these are student counsel, yearbook committee, and prom committee. Some schools even publish a school paper. These schools have editors, writers, publishers, and news crews.
Other extracurricular activities can be academically driven. Activities such as knowledge bowl and debate team are examples.
Students that participate in extracurricular activities are usually happier students. They also take more pride in their campus and school. Taking part in an extracurricular activity can give students a feeling of belonging. They feel that they are needed and fit in at school.
Joining an extracurricular activity is a great way for a new student to make friends and meet others. Extracurricular activities group students who share similar interests.
