Perspective Plays a Big Part

Perspective plays a big part in marriage. Perspective is not something just confined to photography and the creative arts. If we want a happy lasting marriage we need to have the right perspective. In the scheme of life, we need to decide firstly on having a positive perspective. This means looking at your marriage and your spouse in the best light possible.

All too often we can be blind to all the loving, kind and thoughtful things our spouse does. But as soon as they make a mistake or do something that annoys or displeases us, we are quick to react and criticize.

As Lisa pointed out in her article about photography perspective makes a huge difference, in whether a photo works or it doesn’t. Perspective makes a huge difference in the way we perceive our spouse. If we are consciously looking for the good qualities and the thoughtful things they do we are more likely to find them, than if we are looking at them with a critical eye waiting for them to make a mistake.

I’ve even heard people say when their spouse has angered or annoyed them, ‘That’s about all I expected.’

I’m sure you’ve all been in the position at times where you know you want everything to be just right and you try really hard to make it that way. You might be having a big dinner party or a special evening with your spouse and want everything to go right. You’re trying to be so careful. And what happens? Everything goes wrong. It turns out a disaster.

It’s like that for your spouse. If they feel they have to try too hard and you’re just waiting for them to make a mistake and you’re ready to pounce on what they’ve done wrong, and criticize, then pretty soon they going to end up making mistakes.

The alternative is they’re going to end up not bothering to even try and get it right at all, but just please themselves or perhaps find someone who won’t be as critical, but will love them as they are. But if they know you are looking at them with a perspective of love and pride, they are more likely to demonstrate their positive qualities.
