Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about pet insurance. Maybe because of all the money we’ve had to fork out for Murphy’s paw surgery.
Except, I’m not sure if pet insurance would have covered it. I’m not that well versed in the various pet insurance policies out there. But I keep seeing them advertised, so I thought I’d check into it a bit more. Besides, it makes a great article for the Pets Blog!
Types of Pet Insurance Policies
Who has them and where can you get them? Below is a list of some of the pet insurance providers I came across.
- VPI Pet Insurance: They offer five different levels of coverage ranging from a Standard Plan to a Superior Plan. All the plans have some form of coverage for accidents, illnesses, x-rays, surgeries, cancer, prescriptions, and hospitalization, but the more comprehensive plans also cover vaccinations, heartworm, flea control, urinalysis, and dental or spay. Of course, just like with people health insurance, not everything’s covered. Pre-existing conditions, hereditary disorders, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are among some of the things they don’t cover. To get a quote or learn more, click here.
- ASPCA Pet Health Insurance: They also have five different plans. The Safety Plan is for basic accident coverage and their most comprehensive plan is the Sterling Plan which covers accidents and illnesses in addition to long-term conditions. You can see any vet in the United States or Canada, and once you meet the $100 deductible you’ll be reimbursed 80 percent of qualifying expenses. For quotes or to learn more, click here.
- PurinaCare Pet Health Insurance: They offer two different plans, the PurinaCare plus Preventive Care plan or the PurinaCare without Preventive Care plan. Like the ASPCA’s plan, PurinaCare’s also reimburses you 80 percent on qualifying expenses after you meet your annual deductible. Unlike the ASPCA’s plan, PurinaCare offers different deductible levels to determine your monthly insurance payment costs. Click here to check out their website and learn more.
- Embrace Pet Insurance (a partnership with Progressive Insurance): This one’s a little bit different. It’s not pet health insurance, but rather it’s pet injury protection insurance. If your dog or cat is injured during a car accident, policyholders will receive $500 towards vet bills. However, Embrace also offers what they call “full pet insurance policies” which do cover more of the health side of things. To learn more or get a quote, click here.
