I was recently surfing the web for some new ideas to write about, and I came across a whole listing of pet photographers. I love to photograph my pets and those of other people, and so I thought I would pass along some information on photographers that specialize in pet photography.
I’ll start with the most famous pet photographer I know (of), William Wegman. Wegman uses large format polaroid cameras to take pictures of his wonderful Weimeraners. At his siteyou will find some funny videos, photos and assorted other stuff. Check it out. He has a really warped sense of humor.
The following are some sites I found that looked interesting. The first is Petpix. They are based in California, and have a pretty sophisticated web site. They list the ten p’s of pet photography as:
The Ten Ps of Pet Photography
· Preplan: What kind of picture do you wish to take – outdoors, indoors
· Prepare: Camera, film, flash and tripod
· Palette: Choose your colors for background, foreground, materials, flowers, color creatively.
· Paint with light, how does the sunlight or flash light the subject
· Peaceful: Atmosphere must be calm
· Pose your pet for the best angle
· Personality: Bring it out with playfulness
· Patience: Lots of it, don’t rush
· Persistence: It pays off
OR
· Pay Pet Pix
Bryant Dog Portraiture is a fine art photography studio in Texas, that specializes in dog photography. From their site, “Margaret Bryant and Teri Walker work together to create images that capture the personality of your pet and the relationship between you and your pet.” Really nice high contrast photos of dogs.
Hollywood Glamour Pet Photographer, Paul Smyres, feels that “Your pet should be famous”, and so he offers a unique service to pet owners who feel the same way. You can order your free pet photography tipsfrom his site. He also advocates adopting animals from your local shelter, which I think is very commendable.
Then there is PetStar, in Miami, FL, where they have pictures of dogs, cats and birds. I love the shots of the Beagles and Bassetts!
Then, there is Lil’ Critters Photography in Renton WA. Michael does some nice pet portraits, and one of my favorites on his site is the girl with the Bassett. (Big surprise).
I will bring you more pet photography sites in later posts, but that is it for today.
