Planning to take your pets on the road with you? Whether you’re moving cross country, driving to visit friends and family, or just going out for a day at the park, use this pet travel checklist to make sure you have everything you need!
Pet Supplies for Travel
- Carrier or crate — your pet may be more comfortable traveling in a crate or carrier.
- Leash — remember to leash your pet before opening the car door.
- Collar with ID tags and current rabies tags
- Dishes for food and water
- Food and water (bottled water if you think you won’t be able to find a water fountain or sink in your travels)
- Plastic bags or a pooper scooper — always clean up after your pet! And when you stop, try to keep your pet away from flower beds and other landscaping. Stick to marked pet areas when possible.
- Blankets and/or bedding — if your trip includes an overnight stay, your pet may be more comfortable having a familiar bed to sleep on.
- A favorite toy for your pet to play with.
- Grooming supplies — a gentle, soothing brushing can help relax your pet after a long day of travel.
Just In Case
- Copies of vet records
- A recent photo of your pet in case they get lost
- First aid kit
- Carpet cleaner in case of accidents — I took Lally with me on a trip once and as soon as we set foot in the hotel room, she piddled.
Check with your veterinarian before traveling — your vet may have some helpful advice for making everything go smoothly. And if you’ll be staying in a hotel or motel, be sure to ask for a ground floor room for easy outside access. Make sure you know about pet fees and hotel rules in advance; many hotels won’t let you leave a pet unattended in your room.
