PETA Supports Pamela Anderson; Goes After Ringling Bros. Circus Again

If you watched the first elimination show of this season’s “Dancing with the Stars,” you may have been surprised to see Pamela Anderson in the bottom two. While I admit her dancing was a bit more risqué than the other dancers, I certainly didn’t think she deserved to be on the bottom, especially with people like Buzz Aldrin (who has since been eliminated) and Kate Gosselin still in the competition.

Now it seems as if Pamela may have a savior in PETA. The actress, who has been a long time supporter of the animal rights organization, is now reportedly receiving support back. Rumors are that PETA is asking its supporters to vote for Pamela to keep her on the show.

With twelve potential votes per PETA supporter, we will see how long Pamela can survive on the show.

Once again, PETA is after Ringling Bros. circus for reportedly torturing elephants used in its shows. PETA sent a letter to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) last Monday asking the branch of government to shut down the circus.

What spurred the letter was the fact that the USDA just renewed Ringling Bros.’s animal exhibitor license on April 28. PETA has long accused Ringling Bros. circus of animal mistreatment, especially of their elephants. President Ingrid Newkirk said, “Abusive and violent treatment of animals . . . is part and parcel of Ringling’s traveling circus, which requires powerful animals, many of whom were once wild, to learn and perform tricks that are alien to their nature.”

On its web site, PETA has videos, documents, and photos of circus workers prodding and whipping baby elephants and tigers. This is not the first time PETA has asked the USDA to revoke the license.

For its part, Ringling Bros. spokesman Steve Payne said, “This is another indication that PETA doesn’t know what they are talking about.” He also added, “”Our elephants are amazingly treated. They are the stars of the show. We’ve been inspected by the USDA so far five times this year.”
