Pets Behaving Badly: Food

What’s the most outrageous thing your pet has done?

That’s the question I posed to one of my online pet communities. The responses I’ve gotten have been too funny to not share! A lot of the stories dealt with food snatching — those treats that our four-legged friends just can’t resist!

Marci from Michigan talked about her dog Bishop’s crazy cravings: My significant other and I have a very large African Cichlid aquarium in our bedroom. Well, one night after we went to bed, Bishop grabbed a large brand new can of fishy flakes off the dresser. He ate the contents and chewed up the can. All while we slumbered peacefully. My significant other maintains that Bishop has really good color now.

Another Michiganite, Paul, told this story about his boxer, Ike: I had a bottle of beer on the coffee table. Ike bumped into the table and spilled the beer on the floor. Before we could get to clean it up he licked some of it up. A beer lover was born. Ike now knows that glass bottles contain delicious beer that he loves so much. He will purposely knock over beer bottles so he can lick it up. If the beer is in a glass or a can he leaves it alone. Doesn’t even give it a second thought. Hopefully he doesn’t figure out that beer comes in other containers also.

Louisa shared this one: One time my dad went to answer the door while he was making dinner. He gets back to the kitchen, thinking, “I know I left that london broil thawing here on the counter! Where is it?” Looks on the floor, finds a styrofoam base and plastic wrap with teethmarks in it. Goes to the living room, finds my girl Ezzie hiding in a corner, tail between her legs, knowing she wasn’t supposed to eat a 3 lb chunk of raw beef. Poor impulse control, as my mom put it.

That reminds me of the time my brother’s dog Kuma stole most of my father’s sandwich when he got up to answer the door — she took the bread and the meat, but left the lettuce behind! She’s not the only food thief out there. Rebecca from Sacramento, CA says “my dog once took a raw chicken breast off the counter, put it in her bowl and then looked at me like ‘what, its in my bowl and therefore MINE.'” I think that’s pretty dang clever!
